Recommended by more educators than any other trumpet, the silver-plated Yamaha YTR-2330S is considered the perfect instrument for student trumpet players.

What improvements were made to the *NEW* YTR-2330S vs. the now retired YTR-2335S?

  • Updated bell design improves sound quality
  • Monel pistons replace the older model’s nickel-plated pistons
  • Soldered 3-piece main tuning slide improves resonance and eliminates the need for the previous model’s tuning slide brace

The YTR-2330S trumpet is new for 2012, and replaces their best-selling YTR-2335S model, which is now discontinued. The YTR-2335S had been the de facto standard student trumpet for well over a decade. At first glance, the new YTR-2330S appears to be quite similar to its predecessor, and for the most part the design remains unchanged. Yamaha has made no compromises with their new model. Rest assured that the new YTR-2330S upholds Yamaha’s reputation for designing instruments that provide outstanding performance, durability, and quality!

The YTR-2330S Trumpet is also available in a gold epoxy lacquer finish: YTR-2330

Included Accessories: Yamaha 11B4 mouthpiece, premium case (precisely molded to create a snug fit and prevent jarring), valve oil, slide grease, polishing cloth, instruction manual

Check out the intermediate models: Yamaha YTR-4335GII and YTR-4335GIIS (silver-plated finish)

Product Details

Level: Standard
The YTR-2330S trumpet is an entry level instrument.

Key: Bb
The standard Bb trumpet is a transposing instrument. A transposing instrument is one whose music is not read or played at concert pitch. The Bb trumpet sounds one whole step lower than written; therefore, Bb trumpet parts are written to accommodate.

Bore: ML: .459”
The YTR-2330S has a medium-large (ML) bore, measuring .459 inches. Bore size refers to the diameter of the trumpet’s tubing, measured by calculating the diameter of the inside of the 2nd valve slide. ML is an appropriate size for entry level players. Student players should not learn to play on a trumpet with a large bore, as they will have a tendency to overblow and experience difficulty in producing a clean sound at a low volume. Volume control is a difficult concept for many beginners, but a medium to medium-large sized bore will help rather than hinder the student player. For professional trumpet players, bore size becomes more a matter of personal preference – a larger bore generally gives a more open feel, but at the same time may provide less control, and therefore such variances are really dependent on the strengths, weaknesses, and stylistic preferences of the player.

Bell: 4 7/8” Diameter; silver-plated yellow brass, pluzuma welded
The YTR-2330S has a standard-sized, lightweight bell, ideal for entry level players. A high-energy laser utilizes pluzuma welding to fuse the brass together for a virtually seamless bell which allows continuous even vibrations. Like virtually all standard level trumpets, the YTR-2330S has a two-piece bell, but the precise welding technique makes it impossible to visually detect two distinct pieces. Logically, the bell of the trumpet is a vital part of the instrument’s construction, and the materials used to finish the bell impact the resulting sound that the trumpet produces. The silver-plated bell on the YTR-2330S creates a somewhat brighter sound as compared to the gold epoxy lacquer on the YTR-2330 trumpet bell, which creates a more mellow sound.

Body and Leadpipe Material: Yellow brass body; gold brass leadpipe; silver-plated; nickel silver stress points
Brass is known for its beauty, resilience, and durability, making it one of the most common base materials for many musical instruments. Silver-plating protects and preserves the appearance of the yellow and gold brass metals. A silver polishing cloth should be used to maintain the stunning appearance of the YTR-2330S. The leadpipe (the tube from the mouthpiece to the tuning slide) is an integral part of the trumpet’s anatomy, and greatly impacts the instrument’s playability, resistance, and sound quality. The YTR-2330S’s perfectly rounded pressure-formed tubing results in less turbulence and a smoother air flow, thus allowing for an excellent scale and reduced resistance. Nickel silver is a very strong material, and when used at stress points, makes the instrument far more durable.

Weight: Medium
Medium weight is ideal for entry level trumpets, although many cheaply-made brands will produce lightweight trumpets that are far less durable and create a less rich and vibrant tone. Yamaha’s intermediate series of trumpets are also of a medium weight. For young entry level players, a medium weight trumpet like the YTR-2330S provides a stable and solid feel while still allowing for comfort of use.

Key Buttons: Plastic
The key buttons are atop the trumpet’s valves to provide comfort and also to add to the appearance of the instrument. The key buttons on the YTR-2330S are a durable plastic, which is the most common material for standard trumpets. More advanced (and expensive) trumpets, like Yamaha’s professional models, will use real mother of pearl for the key button material.

Pistons/Valves: Monel alloy
As mentioned earlier, the valves have been updated in the YTR-2330S trumpet, moving from the old nickel-plated style to the monel alloy. Monel alloy is highly durable and resistant to corrosion, and Yamaha’s shift to using monel alloy for their standard trumpet offering is based on the success of their more advanced model’s design specifications. The precise fit between valve casings and pistons after honing means no air leakage. The YTR-2330S’s Delrin one-piece valve guides provide longer lasting and quieter valve action than metal valve guides.

Mouthpiece: TR-11B4
The YTR-2330S comes with Yamaha’s TR-11B4 trumpet mouthpiece, which has a somewhat shallow cup and medium rim for extra endurance. This is an excellent size for entry level players and beyond, and results in a brilliant tone. Many mouthpiece options are available for the trumpet, and as players advance, they may opt for a different mouthpiece model based on personal preferences and individual strengths and weaknesses.

  1. Yamaha Standard Bb Trumpet, Silver-Plated - YTR-2330S 5 Star Review

Posted by on 20th Nov 2015

I am a first time customer from Hyson Music. I found the customer service to be WAY beyond what I expected! I LOVE the trumpet I got from them; it far exceeds my expectations of a Chinese made trumpet which probably says more about my prejudice against Chinese products than it does the horn itself LOL I am a student level player but at 59 years old I DO have ears that have been honed to hear quality be it music or the instruments that actually make the music. I recommend the Yamaha trumpet I bought as well as Hyson music with no reservations at all!!!
